Advent Calendar 2011

Happy Advent!

Once more we're starting to look forward to Christmas. Whilst the shops are advertising all the material things we can look foward to, we're despatching enjoyment in the form of music - treasures from Christmases gone by.

Now it's time to set aside a little time in the midst of the pre-Christmas rush, listen, quieten the mind and let our thoughts dwell on the important things in Advent. Peace, blessings, relationships, our fellow humans.

Perhaps you will discover some new Christmas favourites this year? In any event you may have a few surprises about how people interpreted the familiar Christmas music 60 - 70 years ago.

So sit down for a minute, relax and enjoy the sounds of Christmas as heard in the first half of the last century. A blessed Advent to you!

The records have been professionally cleaned and digitalised but are presented here in an unrestored fom, complete with hiss and clicks, perfect for creating the atmosphere of a good, old-fashioned Christmas celebration. The Norwegian Institute of recorded Sound has an archive file in wav format, but the files presented on the website are mp3 compressions of the original archive files.

Whilst you're waiting for the rest of Advent you can listen to Christmas music from our calendars in 2008, 2009 og 2010.

Just to let you know: no alert arrived with me today. I found the piece on your website in any case, but thought I should let you know that the alert went astray.

Interesting that this piece is performed at such a quick pace - in contrast to the very slow hymns and carols! I wouldn't expect to hear this sung so fast these days in the UK. But it's a very lovely recording.
