Mysteries from the archive

We need your help!

Around 25% of the collections at the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound is recorded and cataloged. Over the years we have received several large and small collections from various donors. We are working continuously to catalog these donations, but some records present us with bigger challenges than others.

Some records are more difficult to catalog than others

Some records are more difficult to catalog than others

Many of the records are private recordings. These are often gifts from descendants of more or less well-known performers. These recordings have often collected dust in attics for several years before ending up at the Institute, but by then any information about the recordings have often been lost.

Other records may have recordings of radio broadcasts or copies of records that record collectors such as Arne Dørumsgaard have exchanged in order to fill gaps in their collections.

Common to these unpublished records is that there is little information available about the recordings. Such records must be listened to and we then have to make educated guesses as to what may be on them. Sometimes there is no information what so ever, other times, we have small bits of information we can piece together.

Sometimes we are able to identify such mysteries ourselves, but some records are such great challenges that we come to a standstill. Therefore, we now ask our knowledgeable readers for help. In the series Mysteries from the archive we will post some of these records that we are unable to decode, in the hope that some of our readers can show off their skills and knowledge where we are at the end of ours.

The first mystery is a record filled with love, but not all of the songs are as easy to recognize: Help us solve this mystery!
